Orienteering NSW is excited to be part of Sporting Schools

For more Sporting Schools information please see the link on Orienteering Australia's website - SPORTING SCHOOLS | Orienteering Australia

Orienteering is part treasure hunt, part amazing race.

You go at your own pace, usually on your own but sometimes in pairs or small groups.

It is as much a mental activity as a physical one – hence it appeals to ‘non-sporting’ people and those who are not interested in traditional team sports, where players can be left ‘on the bench’ or take little part in game play.

Orienteering can be conducted outdoors and indoors. It caters for all ages from 4 years through to 95 years, for all levels of fitness, for walkers as well as runners.

MAPS

A school orienteering map is very detailed and a work of art in its own right. On the left is a small segment; for a full school map see this example.

The map is a great resource beyond this program - it will be of use to social science, maths, PE, and gifted and talented classes. And it's a handy planning tool if the school wants to add new buildings!

Our mappers can produce a primary school one (Price on application).

The school retains the map for unlimited future use (as hinted above).

COACHES

You will need a minimum of a Level 0 accreditation to deliver in Sporting Schools. We can:
* upskill coaches who deliver other sports
* reaccredit orienteering coaches whose qualification has lapsed
* accredit orienteers and teachers who wish to get involved

Here are testimonials from schools in the program...

"The teachers and students have loved the program thus far. The children have embraced it. Thank you for your energy and enthusiasm." - Balgowlah North Public School

And some more from AASC sites:

(1) "I think this is incredible. I want this introduced to the whole school. Every kid can benefit from this. It is so good." - Shortland PS.

(2) "Thank you so much for an excellent series of orienteering. The feedback from staff and children has been excellent and the children are always asking when they can do it again. It is the most engaged the students have been in any AASC program." - Our Lady of the Rosary, Waitara.

(3) "This is what some of my boys need. They have really focused like I've never seen them do before - for anything." - Charlestown East PS.

If you are a school wishing to do orienteering, or a coach wishing to deliver orienteering, you must first register via the Sporting Schools website. Please email Jim Mackay (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) with any queries.
