The 2010 Xmas 5 Days kicked off today with a sprint around the University of New England Armidale campus.

With some Queensland competitors being delayed by the recent rains, the first day's field was lower than expected, but the competition was still challenging.

The results from Day 1 can be found here, while the Day 1 splits can be found here.

In the men's elite (MA) competition Julian Dent showed he has not lost anything in speed or technique since the Australian Championships in early October to win the 3.1Km event in 13m 57s, while in the women's elite (WA) event visiting Swede Johana Oberg took out the women's 2.8Km race in 16m 57s. Victoria's Aislin Prendergast was the best of the home contingent in fourth place in 18m 07s, with NSW's Tracy Bluett close behind in 18m 42s.

Tomorrow sees the first of the bush events head south of Armidale to Banalasta.

The event website can be found here.
