Sporting Schools Program
ONSW is part of the new Sporting Schools Program, which has replaced the Australian Sports Commission's Active After-Schools Communities program which delivered 7 free weekly one-hour sessions of introductory orienteering to primary school students enrolled in after-school care.
Looking for an activity that is inclusive and engaging? And as much academic as physical?
Here are testimonials ...
"The teachers and students have loved the program thus far. The children have embraced it. Thank you for your energy and enthusiasm." - Balgowlah North Public School.
"I think this is incredible. I want this introduced to the whole school. Every kid can benefit from this. It is so good." - Shortland PS.
"Thank you so much for an excellent series of orienteering. The feedback from staff and children has been excellent and the children are always asking when they can do it again." - Our Lady of the Rosary, Waitara.
"This is what some of my boys need. They have really focused like I've never seen them do before - for anything." - Charlestown East PS.
School Activities
ONSW offers a variety of services for the introduction of orienteering in primary and secondary schools and can also assist home schooling groups.
Services include:
- Organisation of orienteering events at schools or suitable nearby areas;
- Professionally prepared orienteering maps of schools or suitable nearby area;
- Teacher training, including Level 0 coaching courses;
- Assistance to schools who wish to establish orienteering as a school sport and/or conduct their own orienteering programs; and
- supply of coaches to conduct orienteering as part of the Sporting Schools program (see below).
Activities are tailored to the ages of students, the school grounds or park to be used and particular objectives for the session(s).
The Association is also able to offer schools a discounted package that includes mapping of the school, training of teachers and development of a tailored program.
Cubs, Scouts, Guides and Other Groups
Orienteering activities may be arranged especially for your group, or we would be pleased to make special arrangements for large groups to attend an event near you.
Summer series events are held in most NSW cities and large towns, and can cater for scouts and guides groups with a pre-arranged phone call. A list of contacts can be found on our summer series page here Orienteering NSW - Overview (onsw.asn.au)
Scout halls and guide halls can have the surrounding area mapped for orienteering by Orienteering NSW mappers.
One-off coaching sessions can be arranged at either a mapped scout or guide hall location, or at a nearby park that has been mapped.
Corporate Activities
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor activity which can provide your corporate group with the opportunity to work on their communication, problem solving and teamwork skills. Team orienteering exercises can be arranged for a half day. We will handle all permissions and supply all materials.
