Don MacIntyre set some interesting courses that provided participants with a good introduction to the sport. Starting from near the Museum on Baden Powell Dr courses looped around the water storage reservoir and along the main ridgeline.
Edward and Oliver Gunter had little trouble on their first orienteering venture finding the fences, watercourses and power poles to record a very good 16:13 on the 1600m Short Course, galloping along at 10 mins/km.
Duncan and Emily Farquhar with daughter in the backpack were next home in 29:43. Beryl Latham was third.
On the 2700m Medium Course Edward and Oliver teamed up with mother Kate and again did very well to finish second behind veteran orienteer Wes Campbell. Ester Wetherspoon and her children had a relaxed wander up the hillside to finish third just ahead of the James family group.
The more serious and regular orienteers tackled the 6200m course which first headed north to Coleman St and then followed the ridge line south to Leavenworth Dr before zig-zagging back across the western slopes to Baden Powell Dr. John Oliver had fastest time just ahead of Alex Davey, Debbie Davey and Pauline Moore. John’s time gave him handicap honours for the day.
