The IKN free promotional event at Shell Cove was run alongside the Shell Cove Fun Run. Eleven young children, mostly in small groups and without parental supervision enjoyed the activity, and using SI definitely added to their first taste of orienteering fun. The course was contained within the small park, Freya Reserve, which was mapped by David Green at 1:2000. With no roads to cross, the children could enjoy the new experience whilst feeling very secure and safe. The course was 650 metres in length; times were in the 5 - 7 minutes range. Would this be the shortest course ever offered in the Southern Hemisphere? Even so, not all finished the course, but with a splits print-out and a map to take to mum, they all left smiling.
Flyers were handed out to runners' groups at the Fun Run for the next in the SummerGong series which is on Saturday 9 March at Stuart Park, Wollongong from 3.30pm. More details here. The IKN team are keeping their fingers crossed for new entrants and good weather!

The very scenic Ballast Point Park, the old oil refinery at Birchgrove was a bonus for all competitors in the Sydney Sprint Series event number 8.
The course was set by Lisa "the Doc" Lampe and she really made the runners work. The early part of the course saw competitors stretch out with a series of longer legs into the Mort Bay area. Just as tiredness set in, the competitors returned to the multi level Ballast Point Park where even the simplest control of the final 6 controls can be misread due to the complex nature of the area.
Following the event there was much discussion on the best route choice in that last complex area. The verdict? The quickest was to the finish from the last control, the northern stairs of the southern stairs.
