A big thank you to Uringa's Ori Gudes who stopped his race to help a lost boy at Newcastle's mountain bike orienteering event on Sunday.
Ori was approaching his last control at Killingworth when he came across a distressed boy aged about 10 or 11.
The boy had been walking his dog in local bushland but the dog got out of sight and the boy became misplaced while trying to find the dog.
Ori came to the rescue, calling the boy's dad and calming the lad until the father came to collect him.
Ori remained in touch with the event organisers throughout to let them know of the situation, and had his time adjusted - resulting in a second placing in the Men All Score category.
Well done, Ori.
The last BOSS event for the summer is on Sunday March 13 at O'Donnelltown.
Entries are open for our first State League weekend for 2022 which includes the NSW Sprint Champs.
Central Coast will host the Sprint champs on Sat Mar 19 on the Ourimbah campus of Newcastle Uni, and Newcastle have a Long Distance event the next day at Richmond Vale.
You can enter both events at the same time via this link.
After covid cut short our 2021 State League competition, we look forward to a full year of quality events.
Mountain bike orienteering is a version of our sport that's low-impact and great for anyone who can ride a bike.
Our Newcastle club puts on monthly "MTBO" events over summer - and offers free entry to first-timers.
The next day out is Sun Feb 13 at O'Donnelltown and all the details are on the Eventor page.
They also have a special deal for families and pairs, and provide basic coaching as part of the entry.
Newcastle has two MTBO courses you can do via the free MapRun app - see here for details.
The highlight of the year for MTBO will be the Australian championships in Newcastle from March 25-27. Newcomers are welcome to participate there, too. Entries will be opening soon.
