Our annual round of regional schools championships started in gorgeous autumn weather in Wagga on Monday.
Eighty students were at the Botanic Gardens and Music Bowl for the Riverina titles.
The courses took participants through the adjacent bushland looking for specific earth walls, rock faces, depressions and distinctive trees. The numerous tracks and paths in the area sometimes were a blessing to help navigation and sometimes added to the confusion.
The wonderful weather assisted some excellent performances. Considering many had not been orienteering previously all did very well indeed.
The 3 x 900m relay (pictured) provided a lot of interest with 27 teams on deck. Henty PS (Joel Zweck, Jonathan Coe and Konnar Betts) won the Primary Schools Relay and TRAC (Will Cronk, Angus Roche and Lachlan Billett) won the Secondary Schools Relay.
We hope to see many of these students at the Australian 3-Days carnival over the June long weekend.
WaggaRoos appreciated the assistance received from Lyn Malmgron, Sandra Stewart, Neville Fathers and Robert Spry in making the day the success it was.
A reminder that entries close in less than two weeks for the Australian 3-Days carnival in Wagga over the June long weekend (Jun 10-12).
Monday May 22 is the cut-off and there will be NO extension to entries.
Beginners and newcomers please note: we will be offering Very Easy and Easy courses separately for children and adults.
This carnival is usually held over Easter but was moved due to a clash with the Oceania champs and World Masters events in New Zealand last month. As such there will be no QB III awards this year, but each day will be a State League event and a NOL event.
Saturday is a Middle Distance at Connorton, Sunday is a Long Distance at Burngoogee, and Monday is a Sprint at CSU to allow a quick departure.
Wagga has direct flights from Sydney and Melbourne (with Rex), from Sydney (with Qantas) and from Brisbane (with Jetgo).
The carnival website (linked in blue above) has information on accommodation.
You may enter all 3 days or any of the days. Entries close May 22.
Term 2 of the school year heralds another round of regional school championships and gala days put on by ONSW and its member clubs.
Students do not need to qualify for these days, nor do they require any previous orienteering experience.
The format of each event - a map talk and walk with a coach, an individual age race, then a 3-person relay (see picture, left) - ensures all students get the maximum educational and exercise benefit from the day.
As you can imagine, each day requires many helpers to run smoothly. Club members and parents - if you can assist in any way (registration, coaching, on the start or at the finish, putting out or collecting controls, directing parking etc), please contact Lyn Malmgron (lyn malmgron at bigpond.com).
The culmination of the regional champs are the NSW All Schools Champs, which this year will be held in the Illawarra on August 19-20. All students are invited to compete; again, no qualification is necessary.
In 2016 we had record attendances of 2,217 participants across all schools champs and we hope to better that number this year.
First up are the Riverina champs in Wagga Wagga on Monday May 8. For details and information flyers for all schools champs, please go to the schools champs web page.
Entries are now open for the 2017 Great NOSH Footrace on Sunday June 4.
This 16.4km trail run from Lindfield to Seaforth is an iconic Sydney event celebrating its 43rd year. It's mostly on bush tracks and fire trails, with some steep sections. There's 570m climb throughout the course.
Partner organisation Bold Horizons is assisting Bennelong Northside and ONSW with event management. This year there is the option to pay for a bus from Seaforth to Lindfield (before or after the event). Pre-entry is $35 via Trybooking. Enter on the day is $45 but places will be limited.
