ONSW is proud to announce an 18% increase in participation at events in 2013, taking our total annual participations above 20,000!
And when we add in participations at schools (including the rapidly expanding Active After Schools Communities program) the total is nudging 30,000.
The highlight is a pleasing 23% jump in attendance at regional club events. With new clubs formed recently on the Far North Coast and in Coffs Harbour, the future looks very bright.
Major events in NSW in 2014 are the Easter carnival at Clandulla (expected to attract 800+ each day for four days), the Anzac weekend in Lithgow (for the NSW sprint and long distance championships), the QBIII June long weekend carnival in Dubbo, and the Xmas 5-days in Sydney when we hope to see many European elites en route to Tasmania for the first round of the 2015 World Cup in early January.
ONSW president Paul Prudhoe said: "It's great to see the hard work of so many members result in such a significant increase in participation in NSW, and it's especially pleasing that the sport continues to grow in regional NSW, with both the increase in regional participations and with the formation of two new clubs in 2013.
"While orienteering is essentially an individual sport at the competition level, the increase in participations reflects the fantastic teamwork on the part of all clubs and their members in organising so many successful events. Everyone concerned is to be congratulated and they should be proud to have played their part in this success."
In summary:
in 2013 ONSW hosted 274 events for 20,878 participations, while
in 2012 ONSW hosted 248 events for 17,730 participations.
We sincerely thank all our series co-ordinators and club volunteers who devote many thousands of hours to putting on events. Without this donation of time and effort we simply would not be able to project such a friendly yet professional image to members and casual orienteers alike.
