A bumper turnout of around 120 students from across the state (and just as many parents) enjoyed perfect conditions for the annual NSW schools championships at Mittagong on Sunday.
The venue was SHOO's Boxvale Tramway map on the northern side of the Hume Highway. The bush setting proved challenging enough, as many of the participants' previous experience was in park surroundings for the regional events.
Many of the children saw kangaroos on the course which is always a nice bonus. Add in the tracks, termite mounds, rockfaces, tea tree bush, watercourses and they got a true picture of what our sport has to offer.
Champion primary school was Mawarra PS, champion high school North Sydney Boys, and champion region Sydney South West. Results and splits are on the SHOO site here. And check out the photo album on our Facebook page.
In Memory of Su Lin (1958 – 2013)
Many orienteers will be saddened to learn that long time Garingal member Su Lin Weller passed away in late July. Su Lin had been determinedly fighting a battle with pancreatic cancer, when she was taken out of the blue by a stroke. All of us will miss her happy outlook and friendly smile.
Su Lin grew up in Malaysia, but completed her tertiary studies in Australia, gaining an economics degree from Monash University in Melbourne. She eventually settled in Sydney in 1988, where she forged a career in the reinsurance industry. She was a successful finance manager for an international insurance broker when her career was ended abruptly this year by her illness.
During the 1990s and 2000s, Su Lin and husband Mike were enthusiastic entrants at orienteering events, travelling widely to pursue their passion. Su Lin generally ran in the W35AS class. Her most memorable success was second place in the Easter Championship in Western Australia in 2003.
Uringa's Maureen Ogilvie (pictured) was the highest placegetter among NSW participants in the World Masters long distance final on Saturday.
Maureen is a former WMOC champ and came seventh in the W80A class in Italy.
Garingal's James Lithgow, who won the M55B sprint final, added to his excellent carnival with an 11th placing in the long B final.
The Orienteering Australia website has a summary of all the Australians' performances.
All the events were conducted near Turin at 1,300-2,300 metres (4,000-7,000 feet) above sea level !
