Having just ticked over the halfway mark in the calendar, it's time to reflect on some of the emerging junior talent in our ranks.
While we rightly laud the efforts of our youngsters in NSW and Australian junior squads, nothing ensures continued success like depth. Pressure on encumbents from rising talent will produce better and better results. And so it is with great delight that we can report some impressive performances of late.
Big Foot 11-year-old Ewan Shingler has eaten up very easy and easy courses - along with Space Racing - for several years now (he won M10A at Easter 2012) and it is terrific to see him having a crack at moderate courses in MetrO League division 4, where he has scored 15 points from three runs. At Lapstone, Tom Kennedy (GO, 12) and Sophie Jones (UR, 10) made their ML debuts and completed their courses. High five !
Speaking of MetrO League, six members of Garingal's Divison 5 "Legless" outfit are 15 or younger and the team is into the final in their first year on moderate courses.
Brilliant weather, beaut courses with fast runnable bush, some quirky road-crossing controls and two outstanding sub-junior debuts were the highlights of MetrOLeague 5 at Darks Common in Lapstone.
The Big Foot crew certainly felt the 2C chill at the foot of the Blue Mountains when setting out the controls in the early morning but the day soon warmed up and so did the competition.
Only two teams across the five divisions were guaranteed a spot in the finals before Andy Simpson's talking clock ticked over to 10.01, and when all the textas were put away two hours later it was Bennelong Northside who had roared home, putting all four teams into the Sep 1 deciders at Cataract Scout Camp.
Garingal and the Big Foot have two teams in each, Uringa-Central Coast and SHOO one each.

Albury extended its lead slightly to three points over Wagga after another tight Interclub Challenge near Burrandana today.
Both groups of races were physically challenging with steep hillsides to climb and descend, and large tracts of thick undergrowth, stony ground and many fallen branches to negotiate.
As it turned out there were viable competitions for the Interclub points only in the 5.7km and 3.4km hard navigation races. Points are awarded according to places for an equal number of participants in each race. Most of the Albury orienteers opted for the longer races whereas most of the WaggaRoos entered the shorter races.
On the 5.7km course Albury’s Tony Perrot had some problems trying to locate (A) pit which allowed Wagga’s John Oliver to sneak past. Then on the next leg John had even more trouble locating (A) small patch of rocky ground allowing Tony to regain the lead and score the points. Albury’s Wayne Bajenoff finished third well off the pace.
NSW Sport & Rec is putting on a course for suitable candidates seeking to attain their Level 3 qualification in managing national level and National League teams.

The face-to-face component is at Homebush on October 30-31, with the rest of the course by correspondence prior.

* CEOs, high performance managers and national and state coaches
