Our Newcastle club are a powerhouse in mountain bike orienteering and are working behind the scenes to get events happening once community sport is allowed again.

The Hunter Valley Champs are set down for November 7 and will form part of the annual BOSS series. A decision on this event will be made in late October as the organisers would like to attract entries from across the state.

The BOSS calendar will be out in early October, with the first event proper in December.

In the meantime, Newcastle will soon launch two MTBO courses that can be done using the free MapRun app - at Jesmond Park (Newcastle LGA) and Myall Road (Lake Macquarie LGA). Both maps have riding areas with a mix of bushland, parks and urban cycleways.

Greg Bacon has just finished a test ride of Jesmond and says all the controls registered quickly (just slow near the control).

"We plan on opening up the maps on October 4 with the details, maps and instructions on Eventor. This is such a great system as the logistics are heaps easier for running an event." Check out the Relive Ride of the area for the event.

Congratulations to Big Foot junior star Alastair George and his girlfriend Emily Sorensen who won the South Australian rogaining championships at the weekend.

It was a convincing win, 320 points ahead of the next team (3190-2870), as they covered 92km in the 24 hours permitted - although they finished with an hour to spare.

Amazingly, this was Emily and Ali’s first rogaine! No doubt their backgrounds as elite orienteers helped - Alastair has competed at JWOC and Emily made this year's JWOC Honour team that did not compete due to covid.

Alastair moved to SA, Emily's home state, just before the NSW lockdown.

IKO's Liz Woodgate has been interstate since July and teamed up with an old friend Marc Woods from Alice Springs for his first rogaine. They finished sixth in the 24-hour event and third in the Mixed Veteran age class.

Our Armidale club returned to action on Sunday with an event at Blue Hole Picnic Area that was well attended and featured stunning scenery.

As the name suggests, the event took place around Gara Gorge - where the river bed is rock rather than soil.

Around 30 participants enjoyed some testing courses that involved a river crossing - working out the quickest way to get across was crucial to a good result.

NSW Schools Team member Sam Woolford (Bush n Beach) won the 5.2km Hard 1 course in 42 minutes, while NTOC president Felix Burkhard (pictured) prevailed on Hard 2 (4.1km) in just over an hour.

NTOC's next local event is on October 10 at Kooringle.

Armidale is known for awesome granite maps and we are happy to report we have a State League weekend up there in April 2022, just before Easter.

Orienteering Australia is seeking expressions of interest for 1-2 individuals to lead each of the two squads within the new structure – the High-Performance Squad and the National Development Squad.

Expressions of interest could be in the form of a team of two coaches wanting to work together or as individual applications where OA may choose to appoint two people.

Due to the nature of squad coaching being mostly online, expressions of interest will be accepted from those living both within Australia and internationally.

Expressions of interest close on Sunday September 26, should include a resume and a brief cover letter, and be sent to the OA Head Coach (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

OA is also seeking a new general manager and coaching director after Matthew Dunstan and Hanny Allston respectively had to cut short their terms due to work commitments.
