This is a public recognition of the contribution all the volunteers who made up the wonderful AOC 2024 team.
Way back in 2018 we developed a Vision that this carnival would be organised by a team of orienteers who were willing to volunteer their time to be part of the AOC 2024 Team.
That Vision was to provide orienteers from all over Australia and overseas with an experience that had three components - Great Maps, Great Courses, Great Arenas.
The AOC 2024 Team was made up of well over 60 volunteers from all clubs in NSW and some from interstate.
Ron and I would like to thank you all for your contribution to the Team and share with you some of the comments we have received from competitors and spectators.

AOC 2024 Organisers

This event visits the Willoughby Council area's best parks and reserves, walking trails, historical locations and bush areas. It has the same format as the Sydney Summer Series, but with more time, special places to visit and lots more views. Join us for this special race.
The event is a 120-minute score course with starts from 9am until 10am. (The course closes at 12:15pm.) But there is MORE.
The map is bigger, it covers 4 headlands on Sydney's Middle Harbour (Northbridge, Castlecrag, Willoughby Sugarloaf and Castle Cove). The time is longer (so you can visit more locations). If you want to join as a group there are more options. Most importantly, the controls will be in locations that are significant, either scenically, historically, or culturally.
(The scores will not be included in the Sydney Summer Series total)
NOTE: All entries including Group entries are now through Eventor.

Venue: Warners Park, The Outpost (western end), Northbridge.
Map: The will be a special orienteering-style map for this event. The scale will be 1:12,500
Control descriptions along with details of the significance of each control site will be printed on the flip side of the map.
Note: Access to these bushland reserves depends on ALL participants, keeping to the pathways at ALL times while on their course.
Julian Dent and Mikayla Cooper claimed the $1000 prizemoney in the inaugural Sydney City Race that had participants raving about the scenery on Sunday.
Julian (60m55s) and Mikayla (78m55s) took out the 15km race that featured control sites on top of a Harbour Bridge pylon with 360-degree views, in front of the Opera House with resident seal Benny on the steps nearby, beneath the Harbour Bridge, and in Barangaroo, The Rocks and Hyde Park.
“A world class sprint area, worthy of a Sprint Orienteering World Championships!” said Julian Dent.
“The map was very detailed with areas of complex building and multiple levels which provided some very tricky and difficult route choices. A real orienteering challenge which was intense throughout the 60 minutes.”
There were 332 competitors on the day, with other races contested in 10km, 6km, 3km and score categories.
We would like to thank the 30+ volunteers who helped out on the day for the Sydney City Race. With 120 newcomers needing help understanding what our sport is, and also SI sticks, we needed a lot of helpers. We really appreciate that so many people stepped in to help.
A huge thank you to organiser Sheralee Bailey and course setter Ian Jessup for getting this event up and running - planning is already underway for the next SCR in early 2026.
