The second half of our inaugural Saturday Orienteering Series for school students gets underway this weekend.
The 2014 Term 1 events, which will run from February 8 to April 5, give students (Year 5 and up) of all abilities and fitness levels a safe and confident introduction to our sport in mainly traffic-free locations.
Primary schoolers may go on their own or in pairs, and parents are welcome to shadow them around the course. They have 45 minutes to get to as many controls (checkpoints) as they can, in any order.
High schoolers go on their own, setting off at 30-second intervals on a traditional line course (visiting the controls in a set order).
Discounts apply for students who pre-enter. For enquiries about the series, please contact Barbara Hill (
The NSW orienteering community wishes Admin Officer Anthony Darr all the best as he prepares for a new life in Hobart.
Anthony's wife Kylie works for the Uni of Tasmania and has accepted a two-year secondment to work on the Apple Isle.
Having taken up the Admin Officer position in November 2010, Anthony has been the go-to person for most matters concerning ONSW's organisation especially over the last 12 months with the implementation of the Eventor events calendar and pre-entry system, and more recently with the switch to the Eventor membership module. Over the years most event organisers will have had cause to thank Anthony for assisting them in obtaining the growing list of items (SPORTident units, computers and related equipment etc etc), which as many will know is not easy to keep track of.
"As ONSW President I would also like to personally thank Anthony for his support and for the input he provided," said Paul Prudhoe.
Anthony, a member of Big Foot, took up orienteering in Newcastle many years ago and recently returned to action in the Sydney Summer Series and sprints after considerable time in MTBO.
Our long-awaited Saturday Disney shoot took place at Centennial Park last Friday, and what budding TV stars Duncan Currie (GO) and Georgia Jones (UR) turned out to be!
Working from a very light-hearted script, the two ONSW junior representatives acted out their roles as expert coaches with great humour and precision as presenters Candice and Teigan fumbled their way around the sandstone ridge area in the north of the park.
Duncan and Georgia also got a taste of how time-consuming the film industry can be: takes and retakes, different camera angles, airplane noise disruptions, variable light... and dogs on their morning walk constantly interrupting the filming.
The eight-minute segment took the Disney crew all day to shoot, plus editing time back in the studios. Duncan and Georgia were done in a bit under three hours. It will air in the coming weeks and we will let you know the date as soon as possible.
More photos of the shoot can be seen on our Facebook page.
NSW State League 1 & 2 March 15-16
Entries are now open for NSW State League events 1 & 2 to be hosted by Northern Tablelands on two excellent granite maps at Banalasta and Mount Brown respectively. If you have competed on these maps before, this your chance to make amends for past mistakes; if not you are in for a treat as both maps offer complex granite terrain with open forest providing fast running. It is also a chance to hone your skills in preparation for Easter. Both maps have been recently updated with small extensions added to provide top quality orienteering.
Entries through Eventor close on Monday February 24. See the club web site for more details.
