Latest ONSW News
A reminder to everyone that entries for NSW Rogaining's 6-hour Socialgaine in the Sutherland Shire on Sunday 17 November have been extended until Thursday at 3am. This is their last event for 2013.
And in even bigger news, Australia has been chosen to host the 2016 world championships. They will be conducted in the East MacDonnell Ranges just east of Alice Springs over July 23-24.
Summer series stalwarts used to running on maps that cover 2 sq km check this out - the competition area for WRC 2016 will be about 250 sq km !
We are launching orienteering into the Coffs Harbour region this weekend (Oct 18-20) with three free taster events. Download the flyer for more info.
The exercise will be repeated the following weekend (Oct 25-27) as we continue to expand our reach and hopefully establish a club in one of NSW's largest regional centres.
The events will be the usual summer series format (visit as many controls as you can in 45 minutes). Bruce Meder (0426 876 316) is the local contact and these tasters follow on from his Wheel O event in late June.
The program is:
Fri Oct 18: Botanic Gardens, Coff St. Starts 3-6pm.
Sat Oct 19: Coffs Harbour Foreshore, Jordan Esplanade/Marina Drive. Starts 3-5pm.
Sun Oct 20: Woolgoolga. Lakeside Reserve, Lake Rd. Starts 9.30-11.30am.
Fri Oct 25: Sportz Central. Bray St. Starts 3-6pm.
Sat Oct 26: Coffs Harbour Education Campus. Hogbin Dr. Starts 3-5pm.
Sun Oct 27: Wonga Park, Sawtell. Third/Fourth Ave. Starts 9.30-11.30am.
Our foray into Coffs Harbour follows our successful venture in the Lismore/Ballina region a year ago which led to the establishment of our newest club, Northern Rivers (NROC).
If you are in the Coffs area during our promotional tour, please drop in and help spread the word to the locals that orienteering is a sport for everyone.
While we're on a north coast theme, NROC will be conducting in Grafton monthly Friday evening 45-minute score events over summer. Dates are Oct 25, Nov 8, Dec 13, Jan 10, Feb 14, Mar 14. Details are on the NROC site. Thanks to NTOC's Maurice Anker for producing the map and NROC's Gavin Rayward for organising these events.
Entries close tonight (Mon Oct 7) for our big inner city sprint weekend.
Saturday (October 12) sees the unique two-race Big Foot Sprints at Sydney Uni, and on Sunday (October 13) Garingal are hosting the NSW Sprint championships on a new urban map at Pyrmont.
We already have more than 100 entries for each from Queensland, the ACT, South Australia, Western Australia, the UK and even Norway!
Big Foot's double-bunger is into its 16th year and looks like attracting a record field, coming as it is the weekend after the Aus champs in the ACT. The second sprint is a chasing start, with the first sprint winner setting off and everyone else according to their time gap. We expect IT guru Andy Simpson to be frenetic as he calibrates the second sprint starts.
The NSW sprint champs are our 13th and last State League event for 2013. Point scores for the Orienteer of the Year in each age class have been updated following the recent weekend in Newcastle. By our calculations, the winners in 10 classes are still to be decided - and the badges for minor placings in pretty much every class are up for grabs.
Please note the parking instructions for both days in the respective information flyers within Eventor.
Orienteering Australia and Paddy Pallin are very pleased to announce a nationwide schedule of ‘Paddy Pallin Nav Training, Try Orienteering’ days during November. It is a great opportunity for those who like the outdoors, like discovering new places and want to try an activity the whole family can enjoy. Throughout Australia from Hobart to Darwin, Perth to Sydney, orienteering clubs are organising ‘Paddy Pallin Navigation Training, Try Orienteering’ days so that you can learn the basics of how to read a map and use a compass and try an introductory orienteering event.
Orienteering is a sport for all ages and fitness levels and participants are welcome to walk or jog. Whether you are an average person just wanting to get fitter or try something new, or whether you are a super fit runner, triathlete, adventure racer or mountain bike rider who wants to learn how to navigate with a map and compass, the Paddy Pallin Day provides a wonderful opportunity to pick up tips from experienced coaches and orienteers.
The first event will be on Wednesday 3 November in conjunction with the Sydney Summer Series event at Putney Park, Pelliser Road, Putney. One hour coaching sessions will be conducted every half hour between 4pm and 6pm and then participants can try the Summer Series event. The full schedule of events throughout Australia is at 1_2010 Paddy Pallin Day events.pdf .
Beginners and novices will receive a guide to orienteering, Paddy Pallin free membership form, copies of the Australian Orienteer and Australian Geographic Outdoor, and a Paddy Pallin catalogue and go into a national draw for Paddy Pallin products with a value of $900.
Orienteering club members are encouraged to invite friends, colleagues, and acquaintances to learn the basics and try orienteering on Paddy Pallin Day.
