State League 9 was run this weekend on Lone Pine Road map, an area not previously used for orienteering in the Wallaroo State Forest. With the defining features of the terrain being flat undulating forest, the lack of distinctive features provided some challenging routes to controls, and it was the orienteers who could read vegetation well who headed the results board. Patrik Gunnarsson of Big Foot shone in M35A winning convincingly in 72:52 as did Linda Sesta of Uringa, who had what she described as a 'perfect run' to win W40A in 64:43. WOC team member Mace Neve finished a useful weekend of racing having won the NSW Sprint on Saturday, by winning Sunday's W21A in 82:15.

Hilary Wood used the intricacies of the Ourimbah campus to challenge racers with multi-level courses which saw runners up and down stairs, across bridges and dodging into alleyways around the campus. Some of the controls being positioned under cover in small corridors required pinpoint accuracy at speed, which is the hallmark of a good sprint course. With up to 27 controls on the longest course of 2.8km competitors needed to keep a cool head and many competitors were caught out overshooting, or mis-punching as their legs got the better of their brains.
Michele Dawson, of Garingal Orienteers, was awarded a grant under the Local Sporting Champions to support her racing in the National Orienteering League. The Local Sporting Champions grant is an Australian Government initiative designed to support young people who are participating in State and National level sporting competition. Michele, who attends Presbyterian Ladies College, Croydon, is a long term member of the NSW Junior Squad and has competed for the State in the last four National Championships. Michele will accept her award from Mr Tony Burke, MP for Watson and Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities on Friday 29th July.
