For competitors in State League 8 next Saturday - Central Coast Orienteers have released the Start List and final Event Info.
Newcastle Orienteers have released the Start List and Event Info for State League 9 to be held on Sunday in Wallaroo State Forest.
Susanne Casanova of Top End Orienteers brought home the best result of the competition in the WMOC 2011 when she won silver in W35 in the Long Distance Final. Orienteers from NSW had a mixed fortunes, with a good number getting through to the A finals in both Sprints and Long Distance, but none being able to convert those qualifying runs into medals. Many now head off to the Scottish 6 Days near Oban in the UK whilst others are venturing to the Swedish O-Ringen, the Swiss O Week and the 6 days of Austria. Wherever they go, they will be hard pushed to find as beautiful a sprint course as the Hungarians put on for them around their ancient city of Pecs for the World Masters this year.
Peter Meyer put out a challenging set of courses on the Piggeries map at Belanglo Forest this weekend. Despite temperatures of -7°C and winds of 60km/hr there was hot competition amongst the forty plus runners who turned out. Some had come for the Uringa training session which was set up in collaboration with SHOO to make the most of the opportunity to run and train on quality bush courses. Patrick Gunnarson of Big Foot showed the Red course runners a clean pair of heels coming in over 11 minutes ahead of the next competitor.
A squad of 23 attended the NSW Junior Squad training camp this week in preparation for the Oceania Championships, and the Australian Schools Orienteering Championships this year. Managers Karen and Russell Blatchford, and Head Coach Nick Dent took the opportunity to travel to a variety of locations to give the squad a taste of the race types and terrains that they will have to face in October. Starting with a pairs relays the team overnighted at Belanglo State Forest, then travelled to Wagga Wagga for some sprint training at CSU. Monday and Tuesday saw them training in the bush areas around Beechworth, and at La Trobe University campus where their numbers were swelled by some of the Victorian Junior Squad. The return trip took in their 'Camp Champs', the intra-squad competition that finishes every training squad. The Senior Boys trophy was carried off by Alex Massey, with Michele Dawson winning the Senior Girls. Aidan Dawson made sure that the family trophy cabinet was stocked by winning the Junior Boys and Rebecca George had her first Camp Champs win for the Junior Girls.
