Welcome to Orienteering NSW

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and the mind. It's also loads of fun!

The aim is to use a special orienteering map to navigate your way around a course and visit marked check points along the way. You choose a course that suits your age and experience and proceed at your own pace: walk, jog or run. It is a race but you decide if you want to just race yourself or be the next world champion! The course may take you through urban areas, parks, schools, farmland or forests.

Events are conducted weekly across NSW and beginners are welcome at all events.

New to orienteering? Click here for more information.

Want to enter an event? You can see what's on by looking at the Coming Events at left or by going to the Event Calendar. Some events are enter on the day - you just turn up and register at the start. Other events require pre-entry and for that you need to know about (and register with) Eventor - read the Eventor FAQ.

River and Bay Orienteering Series

The 7th and final round of the 2023 River Bay Series is on today - Sunday - December 3rd at Sir Joseph Banks Park, Mascot.

One of the interesting things about this park is that it was home to Australia’s first zoo. The site’s owner at the time, a timber merchant named William Beaumont, improved the hotel and created the ‘Pleasure Gardens’, which is a more scandalous and giggle-inducing name today than it would have been back then. The gardens included the private zoo.
As well as many animal statues there is a great playground as well as a traffic set up for littlies on their bikes or scooters plus a bbq or two.
The Botany Bay Gift was first held at Sir Joseph Banks Park in 1894, two years before the modern day Olympics, but was cancelled in the 1930s due to corruption before being revived by local business owners in the 1980s. Some of the world’s best runners including British athlete Lynford Christie took part in the race in the nineties, as did Olympic gold medallists Cathy Freeman and Nova Peris.
