Welcome to Orienteering NSW

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and the mind. It's also loads of fun!

The aim is to use a special orienteering map to navigate your way around a course and visit marked check points along the way. You choose a course that suits your age and experience and proceed at your own pace: walk, jog or run. It is a race but you decide if you want to just race yourself or be the next world champion! The course may take you through urban areas, parks, schools, farmland or forests.

Events are conducted weekly across NSW and beginners are welcome at all events.

New to orienteering? Click here for more information.

Want to enter an event? You can see what's on by looking at the Coming Events at left or by going to the Event Calendar. Some events are enter on the day - you just turn up and register at the start. Other events require pre-entry and for that you need to know about (and register with) Eventor - read the Eventor FAQ.

Applications invited for ONSW Board positions

Several long-serving Board members are stepping down next month after helping drive our sport to new heights in participation, publicity and memberships (both individual and club).

If you have the time and interest to contribute to the running of orienteering, please consider nominating for a Board position.

Meetings are normally held once per month in Sydney but the format is flexible and may include evening or daytime meetings and remote access such as Skype.

The ONSW Annual General Meeting will be held in Armidale on Saturday evening, March 15

At that meeting the current President, Paul Prudhoe, will be retiring and a number of other Board positions will become vacant. These include Finance Director (Robert Spry), Promotions Director (Barbara Hill) and Special Projects Director (Kev Curby).

Nominations can be made from the floor at the AGM but if you are not going to Armidale, please express your interest to either Paul Prudhoe in the ONSW office, or by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. Bennelong, Garingal runners take out O'Shea 2-days

A pair of wily old foxes and the Kennedy clan cleaned up at the annual O'Shea 2-days event on the Central Coast last weekend.

Bennelong Northside's Mel Cox (pictured) and Gordon Wilson took out the long pairs section, a win in Sunday morning's score course sealing the victory by nine and a half minutes after neither man had dominated on Saturday.

Mum Tania Kennedy and son Tom (Garingal) won the short pairs division by ten minutes, with Tom also grabbing a win in Saturday night's short leg.

The 3 events in 20 hours, at Kariong and Shelley Beach, meant staying fresh was the key and not being distracted by the prospect of winning the traditional prize: cakes adorned with spearmint leaf lollies... YUM !

With many top contenders away at the opening NOL round in Brisbane, this was a chance for the next tier of regular competitors to claim the goodies. See the result summary.

We thank the Central Coast club for their hard work in putting on this annual fixture.

Great start for young Stingers at NOL opener

It was a great weekend for the Dawsons and Matt Parton as the NSW Stingers kicked off their National Orienteering League campaign in style in Brisbane.

Dual JWOC rep Michele Dawson (Garingal, left) took out the junior women's sprint final on Sunday by more than a minute from visiting Swede Annika Carlberg, and was 3m20s clear of her nearest Australian rival - Jacqui Doyle from the ACT.

Michele's JWOC team-mate Nicola Blatchford (Newcastle) was 4th and Alinta Merrotsy (Northern Tablelands) 6th, underscoring our depth in this division.

In the men's senior ranks, Matt (Goldseekers, pictured right) led by 1 second at the 5th and 6th controls but could not contain Simon Uppill, and finished runner-up by 34 seconds. Andrew Brown (Big Foot) and Josh Blatchford (Newcastle) were 8th and 9th. Matt and Josh were 6th in the relay, while Andrew and Andrew Hill were 7th.

Aidan Dawson has dominated the Sydney Sprint Series and carried that form into the NOL with a fourth placing in Saturday's teams relay with fellow school student Daniel Hill (Garingal), and a highly creditable third placing in the junior men's final behind the dominant McNulty brothers from WA. Daniel was 6th and Toby Wilson (Garingal) 9th.

The top ten runners from Saturday afternoon's qualifying race made the A final, and the rest ran in B finals. Lisa Grant (Garingal) was third in the senior women's B final in an encouraging double after partnering Barbara Hill (Garingal) to 5th in the relay, the best placing by NSW women.

Check out the relay results, individual results, and the OQ website for photos, splits and routegadget. The next round is in Victoria on March 22-23.

BOSS comes to Sydney on March 2

Not Bruce Springsteen, but the Bicycle Orienteering Summer Series!

Mountain Devils are staging the first ever BOSS in the Sydney metro area on Sunday March 2. If you've not done a BOSS before then think Sydney Summer Series for bikes - simple and fun.

While substantially off-road, some of this course will take riders through suburban streets. One course for all with only two classes - men and women.

It's a mixture of line and score course with a time limit of 75 minutes. Starts are from 8-9am at Castle Hill Showground.

See Eventor for the location - and please note there have been substantial road changes due to massive construction activity around the old Hills Council / Doran Road entrance.
The Newcastle website has more info on the event.
