Welcome to Orienteering NSW

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and the mind. It's also loads of fun!

The aim is to use a special orienteering map to navigate your way around a course and visit marked check points along the way. You choose a course that suits your age and experience and proceed at your own pace: walk, jog or run. It is a race but you decide if you want to just race yourself or be the next world champion! The course may take you through urban areas, parks, schools, farmland or forests.

Events are conducted weekly across NSW and beginners are welcome at all events.

New to orienteering? Click here for more information.

Want to enter an event? You can see what's on by looking at the Coming Events at left or by going to the Event Calendar. Some events are enter on the day - you just turn up and register at the start. Other events require pre-entry and for that you need to know about (and register with) Eventor - read the Eventor FAQ.

Entries open for 2018 NSW Schools Champs

This year's NSW Schools Champs are in Sydney's Hills District on September 1-2, and entries are now open via Trybooking.

You do not need to pre-qualify as we believe all students should have the opportunity to compete. Students and parents please note: you must enter online because your school has no involvement in the organisation of this weekend.

Saturday will be two sprints, with combined times determining the winners in each age class. The sprints are at Cherrybrook Technology High School (starts from 11am) and The Hills Grammar School (starts from 2pm).

Sunday's Middle Distance event is at Wianamatta Regional Park, with starts from 9am.

Click here for the Trybooking link and here for the information sheet.

NSW claims 55 ACT titles

NSW orienteers starred at the ACT Sprint and Middle Championships at the weekend, taking out 55 titles across the two days.

The bitterly cold snap seemed to focus many minds, with 'feels like' temperatures in the single figures as winter made an early visit.

Saturday afternoon was a Sprint around Canberra Grammar School, thankfully after the late morning squalls had passed. Setter David Stocks ignored all the open playing fields to construct intricate courses through the many buildings and alleyways.

Some of the standout victories were in our junior ranks: Oskar Mella (Newcastle, pictured) taking out both days in M14A, Niamh Cassar (WHO) winning the W16A Sprint and Andra Leung (Garingal) the W16A Middle.

Duncan Currie (GO) ran a 9.5km cross country for his school on Saturday morning, then bolted down the Hume to take out M20A - beating three JWOC reps!

Barbara Hill (GO) and Jenny Enderby (NC) shared the weekend spoils in W50A, as did Tracy Marsh (Big Foot) and Allison Jones (ACT) in W40A.

In Sunday's Middle at Orroral Campground in fine but cold and windy conditions, Eric Morris (Bennelong) inflicted a rare defeat on Stephen Craig (NC).

Results and Splits are on our State League web page. Tony Hill's beautiful photos from the weekend are here.

Thanks to OACT for a great weekend.

Controller workshops in 2018

Orienteering relies on controllers to ensure our sport is safe, fair and as enjoyable as possible.

Controllers check the design of courses, control location and mapping; and are responsible for overseeing the organisation of events, in particular ONSW’s safety requirements.

To ensure we keep up to date, and continue to accredit and reaccredit controllers, ONSW will this winter conduct free full-day workshops for people wishing to attain (or renew) Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications. You can attend either of these:

* Sat June 23 in the Maitland area (9am-5pm) or

* Sat June 30 at Sydney Olympic Park (9am-5pm) or

* if there is demand, over 3 evenings: in person (probably at Sports House) or by Skype. The nights will be between June 24 and July 14 and decided based on participants’ preferences.

ONSW will (1) pay regional attendees’ travel expenses and (2) find you accommodation.

See the flyer for full details.

New champs crowned at Riverina

Mater Dei Senior School has made a stunning debut at the Riverina Schools champs by taking out the title on Monday.

They won all the girls' events, while Wagga High School claimed most of the boys' placings.

Multiple winners TRAC are rebuilding their teams after losing a lot following last year’s HSC.

59 students from seven schools took part at the Wagga Botanic Gardens under brilliant blue skies. They were a mix of girls and boys, experienced and novice orienteers.

The relays, as usual, created lots of noise and confusion with much ‘advice’ from the waiting runners. We thanks Waggaroos for providing excellent courses and many willing hands to run a great event.
