Learn to Orienteer - Port Macquarie

Welcome to Orienteering NSW

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and the mind. It's also loads of fun!

The aim is to use a special orienteering map to navigate your way around a course and visit marked check points along the way. You choose a course that suits your age and experience and proceed at your own pace: walk, jog or run. It is a race but you decide if you want to just race yourself or be the next world champion! The course may take you through urban areas, parks, schools, farmland or forests.

Events are conducted weekly across NSW and beginners are welcome at all events.

New to orienteering? Click here for more information.

Want to enter an event? You can see what's on by looking at the Coming Events at left or by going to the Event Calendar. Some events are enter on the day - you just turn up and register at the start. Other events require pre-entry and for that you need to know about (and register with) Eventor - read the Eventor FAQ.

Smells like teen spirit

Generation Z recorded some impressive victories around the state on Sunday.

Garingal's Duncan Currie, by the remarkable margin of 48 seconds, took out the Sydney Sprint on a great new map (check out the insets) by Andrew Hill at Middle Head in Mosman.

Duncan was a clear winner from clubmate Aidan Dawson, who has had a stellar summer as he bids to make the Australian team for the junior World Champs in July.

Two other Garingalites right in the mix for JWOC, Toby Wilson and Daniel Hill, were 6th and 7th to cap off the wet evening in the former WWII fort that offered mini mazes of tunnels and sensational harbour views.

In Wagga, teenagers won all three courses in the club's first bush event of the season on Willan's Hill - the north-south ridge that dominates the city skyline.

Lachlan Billett won the 4.4km hard course, with three serious climbs up the ridge line, from veteran John OliverEd McDougall held off veteran Wes Campbell by 29 seconds in the 2.8km moderate course, while Will Cronk smashed the 1.3 km easy course in 10.19, three minutes faster than his rivals.

With the annual Riverina schools champs there in six weeks, it was a handy hitout for the triumphant trio.

We should also mention the special effort of Newcastle duo of Nicola Blatchford and Swedish import Malin Andersson, who were the leading women at the 4km Newcastle Park final... then drove to Sydney to compete in and assist with the sprint at Mosman.

Likewise Dave Lotty, and Dan Redfern and Paul Shingler who ran at SHOO's first Forest Series event in Belanglo State Forest then backed up for the afternoon sprint. We love your dedication!

SHOO Forest Series starts on Sunday

Our winter bush season starts rolling out this Sunday when SHOO put on the first of their monthly Highlands Forest Series events, at Belanglo State Forest.

Courses will be set to cater for all levels of ability and there will be someone on hand to help those new to running around the forest.

SHOO have steadily grown their Summer Saturday series and the Forest series piggy-backs onto that nicely.

It means orienteers in the greater Sydney basin will now have 3 quality events per month over winter: State League, MetrO League and the Highlands Forest series.

The 2015 schedule is:
Mar 15 - Belanglo SF
Apr 12 - Penrose SF
May 10 - Boxvale Tramway
Jun 14 - Lake Alexandra
Jul 12 - Soapy Flat
Aug 2 - Soapy Flat East

For further details, see the series flyer and Eventor.

Belanglo Hut working bee March 18-21

The next working bee for 'The Hut' at Belanglo State Forest is from March 18-21.

The house is available for the use of clubs, schools and individual orienteers for training or even a holiday. The hut includes bedding for approximately 20.  The grounds are also available for camping.

Although the accommodation is basic, there is a warm log fire, cooking facilities and a fridge, tank water and hot showers. Anyone who helps at a working bee receives free accommodation there for the next 12 months.

Tasks we hope to achieve include:
* Grass cutting
* Painting at least one bedroom
* Painting the hallway in The Hut
* Painting the ceiling in the front ‘sun room’
* Spraying the serrated tussock
* Stocking up with wood for the winter
* Painting the window frames inside
* Painting the outside corrugated walls

If you can assist in any way, please contact Kev Curby on 0425 203 462 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. - you'll be fit as a mallee bull for the final Sydney Sprint Series event at Callan Park on Sunday 22 March.
