Sydney Sprint Weekend launched

Sydney will host the opening round of the 2015 State League and National Orienteering League with a sprint weekend boasting two superb new maps.

The Sydney Sprint Weekend will be held on March 7-8. It starts with a Saturday morning relay at Sydney Uni, only two years old but already considered one of the best sprint maps in Australia. NOL runners will do a 4-person mixed relay, while non-elites will do a 2-person relay.

Saturday afternoon we move to Sir Joseph Banks Park at Botany for a NSW rarity - a sand dune environment, mixed with parkland (see segment below) and offering superb views over Botany Bay. This is the first event in the ONSW 2015 State League, with Uringa our hosts. 

On Sunday morning we conclude the carnival by unveiling a new sprint map of the Uni of NSW at Kensington. Expect more complex campus navigation. This will be the NSW Sprint Championships and State League event 2, hosted by Garingal.

Billeting survey for Xmas 5-Days and March Sprint weekend

Sydney will soon be hosting two major national carnivals and, to assist visiting orienteers, we are seeking expressions of interest in billeting competitors.

The Xmas 5-Days runs from December 27-31, and the Sydney Sprint Weekend is on March 7-8, 2015.

The Sydney Sprint Weekend includes the opening rounds of the 2015 ONSW State League and National Orienteering League, and as such we expect about 100 participants from interstate.

At both carnivals, the vast majority of events are near the CBD and easily accessed by public transport.

Orienteering promotion at Planetfest

More than 100 children and parents had a taste of orienteering at PlanetFest at Sydney Olympic Park on Sunday.

 

PlanetFest is an interactive, inspiring and fun-filled event designed to engage and promote the conservation of parks and worldwide protected areas to the community.

 

In conjunction with NSW National Parks, Orienteering NSW provided a short, 10-control course with a Wilderquest theme, with each control featuring a picture of an animal that lives in SOP. Controls were placed on stalls erected by other exhibitors around Cathy Freeman Park in an area 200m x 100m.

National Parks provided a 12-month all-park pass and a backpack for a lucky draw prize, won by a beaming six-year-old.

As well as introducing children to the sport, ONSW answered a steady stream of enquiries from adults, many of whom had tried the sport in their younger days. We also explained what orienteering is to delegates from the International Union for Conservation of Nature - perhaps orienteering will take seed in Jordan, Nepal and Peru!
