Welcome to Orienteering NSW

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and the mind. It's also loads of fun!

The aim is to use a special orienteering map to navigate your way around a course and visit marked check points along the way. You choose a course that suits your age and experience and proceed at your own pace: walk, jog or run. It is a race but you decide if you want to just race yourself or be the next world champion! The course may take you through urban areas, parks, schools, farmland or forests.

Events are conducted weekly across NSW and beginners are welcome at all events.

New to orienteering? Click here for more information.

Want to enter an event? You can see what's on by looking at the Coming Events at left or by going to the Event Calendar. Some events are enter on the day - you just turn up and register at the start. Other events require pre-entry and for that you need to know about (and register with) Eventor - read the Eventor FAQ.

First call for Easter 2014 volunteers

It's only seven months until we host Easter 2014 and we will need as many volunteers as we can to help make this major annual Australian carnival a big success.

All volunteers will have ample time on the day to warm up and compete in their own race.

Rob Vincent, Ron Pallas and Nick Dent, our event directors, have been progressing with the planning for this event for the past two years.
If recent Easters are anything to go by, we anticipate around 800 entrants. The carnival stretches from Good Friday (April 18) to the Anzac long weekend (April 26).

The event directors are planning to organise a number of teams of volunteers to help run the four days of the Easter events. We are asking both clubs and individuals to consider offering to help as part of one of the following teams: Start, Finish (IT), Parking, Logistics (arena setup and move), Presentations, Registration, Control collection, Meetings Co-ordinator, Information tent.

We already have some volunteers but many more will be required to enable these events to proceed smoothly. You can volunteer by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and indicating the team that you or your club (with names) wish to help with.

Medals shared in MetrOLeague finals

A glorious sunny day, the place to ourselves, what looked to be a fast map... and medals pretty much shared around - what a great finale to our MetrOLeague season at Cataract Scout Camp.

The wash-up is that Big Foot won Divisions 1 and 4, Bennelong upset the favourites in Division 2, front-runner SHOO took out Division 3 and the GO Legless kids triumphed in Division 5.

Individual medals went to Patrik Gunnarsson (BF), Ian Jones (UR), Doug Jay (SH), Salme Fuller (IK) and Jonathan Koruga (GO).

Read about it all on our ML page which has all the results from Sunday's action, and there are some pics on our Facebook page.

Thanks to organiser Kev Curby and the IKO crew, and best wishes to course setter Chris Wilmott who took a turn last week and is now recovering.

With a record 29 teams in 5 divisions, MetrOLeague is growing and all set for an even bigger 2014.

Aidan, Nicola Stingers of the month

The Stinger of the month for June is.... Aidan Dawson.

Aidan, 17, is in year 11 and has his sights firmly on following older sister Michele to JWOC. He comfortably took out M18A at the QBIII and his three most recent NOL junior mens events (at Canberra in May) have been his highest scoring races of the year.

"I've doing a lot more fitness training this year, so as I'm getting fitter I find I'm making fewer mental mistakes," said the NOL rookie, who appears on the cover of our 2013 Winter Booklet.

Aidan was also commended for abandoning his course at Macquarie Uni in July to help Garingal colleague Jim Merchant who had fallen and cut his head.

And you can always find Aidan in the catering tent at State League events... helping fundraise to support the NSW junior squad.

The Stinger of the month for July is... Nicola Blatchford.

Nicola (Newcastle) made her JWOC debut in July and performed creditably in a very tough field of experienced Scandinavians and other highly-fancied Europeans.

She is the highest placed NSW runner in the junior women's section of the NOL and has two second placings this year - one of them being the chasing start on the last day at Easter in Bendigo.

Look out for Nicola on the cover of our 2013-14 summer booklet!

We wish both our talented winners here the best of luck with their training and racing. They each win an Endura pack – nutrition for elite athletes to help them train harder, race faster and recover quicker.

NROC inaugural event a big hit

007They came in pairs, they came in groups and they came on their own... but the best thing is they came ! Congratulations to our newest club, Northern Rivers, for attracting 43 participants to their inaugural event at Alstonville.

Sunday afternoon presented a standard 30-control score course based at Geoff Watt Oval and setter Henning Hansen was delighted to report a top score of 500 (out of 600 points). Clearly there is some latent O talent on the far north coast!

It was a very encouraging start to NROC's life as an O club and we hope they prove just as popular at their next outing on the Lake Ainsworth map. For a longer report and photos from Alstonville, go to the NROC website.
