Welcome to Orienteering NSW

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and the mind. It's also loads of fun!

The aim is to use a special orienteering map to navigate your way around a course and visit marked check points along the way. You choose a course that suits your age and experience and proceed at your own pace: walk, jog or run. It is a race but you decide if you want to just race yourself or be the next world champion! The course may take you through urban areas, parks, schools, farmland or forests.

Events are conducted weekly across NSW and beginners are welcome at all events.

Want to enter an event? You can see what's on by looking at the Coming Events at left or by going to the Event Calendar. Some events are enter on the day - you just turn up and register at the start. Other events require pre-entry and for that you need to know about (and register with) Eventor - read the Eventor FAQ.

Georgia fourth in Aus senior girls champs

Georgia Jones (Uringa) was the best-performed NSW athlete at the Australian schools champs at Maroon on Wednesday with a fourth placing in the senior girls division.

Newcastle's Claire Burgess also had a great run to be among the top ten Australian finishers.

Alastair George (Big Foot) was the fifth Australian and Duncan Currie (Garingal) sixth in encouraging performances in the senior boys class.

It was a similar story in the junior boys with Ewan Shingler (BF) and primary schooler Alvin Craig (NC) the fifth and sixth best Australians.

With temps in the high 20s - and steep, rocky terrain - the going was tough for everyone. Our junior girls were giving away several years in age and experience, so the top-15 results for Ellen Currie (Garingal) and Sophie Jones (UR) are promising for next year on home soil.

In the public races, Tony Woolford (Bush n Beach) was fifth on course A, Rebecca George (BF) ninth on Course B, Gordon Wilson (Bennelong Northside) sixth on course C, Rudi Landsiedel (NC) second on course D, Ross Barr (GO) ninth on course E, and Jamie Woolford (BB) fifth on course G.

The schools champs conclude on Thursday with the relays.

Alvin Craig wins silver at schools sprint

Alvin Craig has shown his pedigree with a stunning second place in the junior boys sprint at the Australian schools championships on Monday.

Alvin, just 12 and still in primary school at Newcastle, was up against students aged 14 and 15 but showed the benefits of six years of orienteering in Sweden to zip around the 2.5km course in 10m29s, just 22 seconds off the winning time at Palm Beach Currumbin High School.

"I made a few tiny mistakes and probably dropped about 15 seconds but otherwise it was a good clean run," said Alvin, pictured left with his medal.

The map was one of the tiniest ever seen at a major event, and the navigation was a tad easier than at Griffith Uni on Saturday.

Duncan Currie was fifth in the senior boys, just 12 seconds off third. Our best result in the senior girls was Georgia Jones (11th) and sister Sophie 16th in the junior girls.

In the public races on the same courses, Nicola Blatchford (Newcastle) won the 2.5km senior girls course while clubmate Rob Bennett was second in the senior boys over 2.8km, and Jamie Woolford (Bush n Beach) won the easy course.

Heartbreak as Stingers second by a second

Our Stingers went oh so close at the Australian Relay Championships on Sunday, being pipped in the finish chute by ACT in the men's elite class.

Rob Bennett gave it everything but Ian Lawford had just a bit too much as they rounded the final bend in the race for home (see pic).

Alex Massey and Toby Wilson put NSW in the lead with two fast, consistent runs - but WOC rep Lawford triumphed in a grandstand finish.

NSW winners were W45 (Jenny Enderby, Karen Blatchford, Barbara Hill), M35 (Jock Davis, Lee Coady, Damian Enderby), M45 (Eric Morris, Peter Annetts, Scott Simson), M65 (Robert Preston, Ross Barr, Gordon Wilson).

Rumour has it an ONSW employee was waiting in line for the portaloos when his relay buddy finished in just 12 minutes, and was subsequently eight minutes late tagging her to start the second leg. Sounds like a wombie!

Thanks to OQ for a lovely setting at Mundoolun. Map attached.

Duncan leads Aus Sprint winners

NSW orienteers cleaned up at the Australian Sprint Championships on the Gold Coast on Saturday, led by Duncan Currie's domination of M16A.

Duncan (Garingal) streeted the field by nearly three minutes on a very tricky map that would have been easier to read at 1:3000 than the 1:4000 presented.

Other winners were Anna Fitgerald (Goldseekers, W40A), Barbara Hill (GO, W45A), Jenny Hawkins (Northern Tablelands, W70A), Maureen Ogilvie (Uringa, W80A), Alvin Craig (Newcastle, M14A), Hugh Gingell (GO, M20A), Shane Doyle (UR, M45A), Jock Davis (Big Foot, M50A), Ross Barr (GO, M70A), Peter Meyer (SHOO, M75A), Katie Wallace (Western Plains, Open Easy).

Sunday sees the relays at Mundoolun.
