Welcome to Orienteering NSW

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and the mind. It's also loads of fun!

The aim is to use a special orienteering map to navigate your way around a course and visit marked check points along the way. You choose a course that suits your age and experience and proceed at your own pace: walk, jog or run. It is a race but you decide if you want to just race yourself or be the next world champion! The course may take you through urban areas, parks, schools, farmland or forests.

Events are conducted weekly across NSW and beginners are welcome at all events.

New to orienteering? Click here for more information.

Want to enter an event? You can see what's on by looking at the Coming Events at left or by going to the Event Calendar. Some events are enter on the day - you just turn up and register at the start. Other events require pre-entry and for that you need to know about (and register with) Eventor - read the Eventor FAQ.

Nicola, Michele in action at World Uni O Champs

NSW orienteers Nicola Blatchford (Newcastle) and Michele Dawson (Garingal) have had their first two races at the World Uni Champs in Hungary.

Nicola placed 48th in the 9.8km Long distance event on Monday night our time, 27 minutes behind the Finnish winner.

Unfortunately, Michele was disqualified in Sunday's Sprint. Mum Barb explains: "There was a closed path marked on the map, but this was not taped on the course as per briefing instructions. Michele misread her map and ran through, and 12 girls were disqualified at this point. The controller went out and taped the area out of bounds before the men's event. At the team managers/coaches meeting that night the organisers apologised for the error."

The athletes get no break, with the Sprint Relays on Tuesday night, the Middle distance on Wednesday and the Relays on Thursday. Follow the action on the event website.

New WHO map is a real 'goa!

WHO's brand new Mulgoa map returned MetrO League to its true bush roots and sealed the 2016 finalists in telling fashion on Sunday.

The Barry Hanlon-Janet Morris creation is on the very eastern edge of the Blue Mountains National Park and was soon being spoken of as a potential State League venue.

Some of the legs on the moderate courses (Divisions 3, 4, 5) were of hard standard and required the full range of orienteering skills to navigate without substantial time loss.

As it was, only eight runners across the 140-odd Metro entries finished in under 40 minutes - a testament to the mental and physical difficulty of the courses.

As is often the case, when the going got tough, the tough got going. Big Foot and Garingal triumphed in Division 1 with six of the eight fastest times and will meet in the last round at Galston, with the Goannas needing a win to retain the trophy they took from the Feet a year ago.

In Division 2 it will be the new merged entity SHOO-IKO taking on the GO Dragons and looking for promotion to Division 1.

Bennelong Northside are in the other three finals: taking on SHOO-IKO in Divison 3, the unbeaten GO Legless in Division 4, and WHO in Division 5.

The ML web page has been updated with all the scores and splits, including the race for the individual medal in each grade. The current leaders are Andrew Hill (Div 1), Doug Jay (Div 2), James Southwell (Div 3), Rod Parkin (Div 4) and Tshinta Hopper (Div 5).

It was great to see the Needhams from the ACT and Northern Tablelands president Felix Burkhard participating.

Thanks to the WHO crew for a lovely day out. The finals are on a new Garingal map at Galston on September 4.

Introducing our inaugural ONSW scholar Atte Lahtinen

Orienteering NSW is pleased to announce our inaugural scholarship holder: Atte Lahtinen.

Atte is 22 and from Espoo, a city right next to Finland's capital Helsinki.

He started orienteering at age seven and has competed in eight Jukola races and six Tiomila relays. Atte lists his best achievement as winning Ungdomens 10mila in 2012, a 10-leg night relay for ages 13-18. His Finnish club is Helsingin Suunnistajat, one of the largest orienteering clubs in the world.

"In civilian life I am an Information Technology student in Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. I come from an orienteering family - my dad is president of our club. In my free time I like to follow NFL, NHL and NBA, and learn or find out about all kinds of things. I speak three languages and try to learn fourth," said Atte.

"I enjoy generally helping people and seeing the development in progress. Four years ago I dreamed about an opportunity like the scholarship, and now it's all getting real. Travelling to Australia has also been a dream of mine, and now I can do it the best way possible: doing what I love the most, and living with "normal" people, because that is how you truly experience a country."

Atte is expected to arrive in September and will spend six months living with orienteering families across the state. We thank all the hosts for their generous offers to house Atte.

Narellan Vale takes out Sydney South West primary title

Almost 300 students from the Macarthur region took part in the annual Sydney South West primary schools champs at Camden on Wednesday.

The event was rescheduled from June due to inclement weather and resulted in 298 entries from 11 schools.

Champion school was Narellan Vale, wresting the title from Mawarra for a change.

A huge thanks to Lyn Malmgron, Sandy Stewart and the team of helpers for making it a great day out.

A reminder that entries are open for our annual NSW schools championships at Lansdowne on August 27-28. Students must register via Trybooking.
