Welcome to Orienteering NSW

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and the mind. It's also loads of fun!

The aim is to use a special orienteering map to navigate your way around a course and visit marked check points along the way. You choose a course that suits your age and experience and proceed at your own pace: walk, jog or run. It is a race but you decide if you want to just race yourself or be the next world champion! The course may take you through urban areas, parks, schools, farmland or forests.

Events are conducted weekly across NSW and beginners are welcome at all events.

New to orienteering? Click here for more information.

Want to enter an event? You can see what's on by looking at the Coming Events at left or by going to the Event Calendar. Some events are enter on the day - you just turn up and register at the start. Other events require pre-entry and for that you need to know about (and register with) Eventor - read the Eventor FAQ.

QB III a big success for Coffs

Coffs Harbour stamped itself as a terrific new orienteering venue by hosting a wonderfully diverse QB III carnival over the long weekend.

Bush n Beach, our newest club and ONSW club of the year for 2015, turned on glorious weather and intriguing courses with more than 350 entries.

ACT elite couple Jo Allison and Dave Shepherd took out the 21A classes overall, although Nicola Blatchford (Newcastle) enjoyed a stunning 1-minute win in Monday's sprint.

The weekend opened with a middle distance at Boambee Dunes. Sand dune orienteering is a rarity in NSW, with the form lines on the map confusing many. Were they small depressions or hillocks? We won't mention the ONSW board director who took 43 minutes to the first control!

There was fast running for the long distance at Bom Bom State Forest on day two, where Grafton (21C) was the warmest place in NSW. Barbara Hill (Garingal) edged out Martina Craig (NC) in W45A, while Sharon Burgess (NC) pipped local Julie Irvine (BB) by one second in W45AS.

Overnight rain cleared for the early morning sprint at CHEC on Monday morning. Duncan Currie (GO) won M16A and Andrew Barnett (ACT) had a strong win in M21A.

Results are on Eventor, the courses are on Routegadget, and check out the fantastic photos by Tony Hill. A massive thanks to everyone who contributed to a very successful carnival.

All participants are asked to please fill out the brief Course Setter of the Year survey for each day.

Our next State League weekend is in late August when Uringa host the NSW Schools Championships near Bankstown.

Next MTBO round at Newcastle

Newcastle are putting on our next weekend of mountain bike orienteering, at Wallaroo State Forest on June 18-19.

Each day will have three course options. Pre-entry is preferred and entries close on Tue Jun 14. Full details including the event flyer are on Eventor.

If you like to get on a bike but haven't tried MTBO, it's even more engaging. If you're a regular Foot-O person, it's a great cross-training activity... and you can't really get lost as you'll be on tracks the whole time!

MTBO is one of a few less-common forms of orienteering this month.

On Wednesday June 15 Garingal are putting on their monthly Moonlight Madness night score event, this time at Waverton. You'll need a headlamp or torch.

And on Saturday June 18 Garingal's popular puzzle pundit Duncan Currie is treating us to an ultra sprint at Leichhardt. This event has 3 short sprints (about 1.3km each) within a 2-hour window. Mispunches incur a 30-second penalty instead of no time being recorded. Lots of fun and great training. Pre-entry is essential.

Aus champs entries open

Entries are now open for the Australian championships carnival in south-east Queensland in September-October.

Our hosts promise 11 great events over nine days throughout the Gold Coast, Scenic Rim and Granite Belt.

The carnival includes the annual Australian schools championships, and runs from Saturday September 24 to Sunday October 2.

Entries close at midnight on Sunday August 28.

Snogaine added to ski O champs

Big Foot have added a 2-hour 'Snogaine' to this year's ski orienteering day at Perisher on Sunday August 7.

This will be the fourth year the Feet have conducted ski O as part of Perisher XC Week, and this year our ACT friends at Bushflyers will be assisting.

The day will offer three line courses and a 2-hour snogaine. Full details can be found here. Don't fight winter - join it! Thanks to Big Foot for proving to the world that you can do ski O in Australia.
