Welcome to Orienteering NSW

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and the mind. It's also loads of fun!

The aim is to use a special orienteering map to navigate your way around a course and visit marked check points along the way. You choose a course that suits your age and experience and proceed at your own pace: walk, jog or run. It is a race but you decide if you want to just race yourself or be the next world champion! The course may take you through urban areas, parks, schools, farmland or forests.

Events are conducted weekly across NSW and beginners are welcome at all events.

New to orienteering? Click here for more information.

Want to enter an event? You can see what's on by looking at the Coming Events at left or by going to the Event Calendar. Some events are enter on the day - you just turn up and register at the start. Other events require pre-entry and for that you need to know about (and register with) Eventor - read the Eventor FAQ.

ONSW orienteers excel at Easter

Seventeen orienteers from 10 NSW clubs won their age classes overall at the big national Easter carnival in Queensland, where long grass made for tricky navigation.

The carnival was an outstanding success, with more than 600 entries.

In the elite classes, Ewan Shingler (Big Foot, pictured) won M20E, sister Nea was second in W20E, clubmate Alastair George was an impressive second in M21E, and Sam Woolford (Bush n Beach) was likewise a fantastic second in M20E.

Congratulations to our Easter class winners:

M20E: Ewan Shingler (Big Foot)
M/W21AS (Sledge): Jock Davis (BF)
M16A: Cooper Horley (Garingal)
W16A: Lilja Lehtonen (GO)
W18A: Eszter Kocsik (GO)

Gill, Melissa win ultra marathons

Two of our incredible members - Gill Fowler and Melissa Robertson - have excelled in gruelling endurance races at the weekend.

Gill (Big Foot, pictured) won the women's 40-49 age class at the inaugural kunanyi Mountain Run in Hobart and was sixth fastest woman overall.

The 68km course was limited to 200 pre-qualifying participants and included a phenomenal 4km of climb, and Gill got home in 10h12m.

Over in South Australia, Melissa (Central Coast) won the Irrational South 200 miler (320km) and set a new female race record of 62h3m.

That's seven and a half marathons! Unsurprisingly, there were only 40 entrants.

Congratulations to both women!

Long grass slows down granite hunters

Long grass made for slow times at the Armidale State League weekend that served as a great tune-up for the national Easter carnival in Queensland.

The summer's big wet has turned countryside that last year was bone dry into tall fields that significantly reduced visibility and speed as a result.

Wins that caught our eye at the Middle Distance on Saturday were by Stephanie Dun (HOGs) in W Junior B and Lachlan Coady (WHO) in M14A.

In the Long Distance on Sunday, Sheralee Bailey (Bennelong) beat Jenny Enderby (Newcastle) by 11 minutes in W50A, Will Kay (WHO) took out M16A and Andrew Dun (HOGs) won M Open B.

A big thank you to Northern Tablelands for their efforts over the weekend.

You can see all the results, splits and Livelox on our State League page. You can see the updated OY scores here.

Please fill out the very brief Course Setter of the Year survey for each day.

The next SL events are at Wyangala Dam and Roseberg SF on May 14-15.

Debbie Davey wins ACT Autumn Classic

Congratulations to Debbie Davey (Waggaroos, pictured) who took out first place overall at the ACT Autumn Classics weekend.

Debbie won W65A on both days and, using the OACT age/gender handicap system, was ranked first of all competitors with 247 points out of a maximum 250.

Ewan Shingler (Big Foot) cemented his place atop the Junior National League rankings by winning M20E both days, while sister Nea had a first and a second.

Other ONSW members to win both days were: Ryder Seaman (M10A, WR), Alex Woolford (M16A, Bush n Beach), Rebecca Craig (W16A, Newcastle) and Paula Shingler (W55A, BF).

Other outstanding NOL results were Alastair George (BF) second in M21E on Saturday, sister Rebecca third in W21E on Saturday, Oskar Mella (NC) third on Saturday and Briohny Seaman (WR) third in W21Sport on Sunday.
