Learn to Orienteer - Port Macquarie

Welcome to Orienteering NSW

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and the mind. It's also loads of fun!

The aim is to use a special orienteering map to navigate your way around a course and visit marked check points along the way. You choose a course that suits your age and experience and proceed at your own pace: walk, jog or run. It is a race but you decide if you want to just race yourself or be the next world champion! The course may take you through urban areas, parks, schools, farmland or forests.

Events are conducted weekly across NSW and beginners are welcome at all events.

New to orienteering? Click here for more information.

Want to enter an event? You can see what's on by looking at the Coming Events at left or by going to the Event Calendar. Some events are enter on the day - you just turn up and register at the start. Other events require pre-entry and for that you need to know about (and register with) Eventor - read the Eventor FAQ.

BF Sprints new date Sun Feb 7

Big Foot have rescheduled their annual Sprints to Sunday February 7.

The original December date was postponed due to the northern beaches coronavirus outbreak.

This unique two-race event features a chasing start for the second run. Expect some great bush tracks and rock.

Did you mess up at the SOS, DUO or SSS on this map last year? Here's your chance to finally get it right!

Please note this event will be pre-entry only. There will be NO enter on the day for the main event.

See the flyer for full details.

Entries are open, and close midnight Thursday February 5.

SSS clocks up 500th participant for 2020-21

Congratulations to Garingal junior Holly Roberts who is the 500th unique Sydney Summer Series entrant this season.

Holly had her first run for 2020-21 at Haberfield last Wednesday, where series founder and organiser Ross Barr presented her with an SSS running top as a special prize.

What a bumper season we are having, with every event so far attracting more than 200 attendees.

In further encouraging news, we sold a record 125 season tickets, and the average attendance for the free MINI course (aimed at primary school-aged children) is 12 people per event and growing.

We also have 2 events to catch up from the December corona outbreak: Mosman will now be held on Monday February 1, while the North Rocks event is yet to be rescheduled.

Ewan Shingler wins President's Junior Award

Big Foot star Ewan Shingler has taken out the ONSW President's Junior Award for 2020.

As well as being a seriously impressive athlete and orienteer, Ewan puts in the hard yards behind the scenes on many fronts.

He is a key contributor to the Stingers fund-raising event organising and support activities, is currently orienteering coach at Knox Grammar and has helped IKO and Uringa with their recent River and Bay Series.

Ewan was event director for the Falnash Frolic bush event in November, originally planned as a State League, and had the same role for Day 3 of the unfortunately cancelled 2020 Xmas 5-Days carnival.

He last year blitzed the field in the annual 12km Bare Creek Trail Run, and was this week featured in the Sydney Striders' magazine where he stated his immediate aim was to represent Australia at the junior world orienteering championships.

This win continues his family’s reputation for service to orienteering quietly, consistently and dependably.

Congratulations Ewan.

Carol Jacobson wins 2020 President's Award

Garingal "Jill-of-all-trades" Carol Jacobson is a thoroughly deserved winner of the NSW President's Award for 2020.

Carol's professional academic career in cartography makes her a natural to be Garingal's main mapping officer.

Add in writing event organiser manuals, compiling the club's roster of helpers, making new maps, looking after SI from time to time, and setting summer series courses - and you've got a much loved member who gives everything to the sport.

Carol is also a Level 2 Controller and often takes on club members who are novice planners to nurture them so that they learn and enjoy the experience.

She first joined the Garingal committee in January 2000 and has served in various important roles ever since - a period of 20 years – including president, vice-president and events organiser.

A simply monumental contribution to orienteering.

Congratulations Carol.
