Learn to Orienteer - Port Macquarie

Welcome to Orienteering NSW

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and the mind. It's also loads of fun!

The aim is to use a special orienteering map to navigate your way around a course and visit marked check points along the way. You choose a course that suits your age and experience and proceed at your own pace: walk, jog or run. It is a race but you decide if you want to just race yourself or be the next world champion! The course may take you through urban areas, parks, schools, farmland or forests.

Events are conducted weekly across NSW and beginners are welcome at all events.

New to orienteering? Click here for more information.

Want to enter an event? You can see what's on by looking at the Coming Events at left or by going to the Event Calendar. Some events are enter on the day - you just turn up and register at the start. Other events require pre-entry and for that you need to know about (and register with) Eventor - read the Eventor FAQ.

Cooper Horley named Rookie of the Year

Garingal tyro Cooper Horley has added the 2020 NSW Rookie of the Year award to his rapidly expanding orienteering resume.

In 2019 he was a member of the triumphant NSW school team that won the national title for the first time in 17 years.

And Cooper last year won the individual medal in Division 2 of the Sydney Metro League, running Hard courses despite being only in Year 8 and his second year in the sport.

This summer he has been regularly finishing in the top 10 scorers each week in the Sydney Summer Series, showing some serious speed and skill.

Congratulations Cooper!

Our 2020 presentation day was cancelled due to the covid outbreak over Christmas, so we rolling out the awards as we get through this holiday period and when the winners are at events. More coming soon!

Special family deal for BOSS events

Our first MTBO (mountain bike orienteering) event for 2021 is on Sunday morning at Killingworth in Newcastle.

The BOSS (Bike Orienteering Summer Series) is booming and we are delighted to add a special arrangement for families whereby a parent can ride early, then go out again with the kids.

See the flyer for details. This is so much fun and a great school holiday activity for children of all ages.

Solo riders have the choice of a line course then a score course (this option is for serious riders) or a score course, both with a time limit of 75 minutes.

Our dedicated MTBO web page has been updated. More links will be added as information comes to hand.

Active Kids options expand for 2021

ONSW is pleased to offer a wider range of ways to redeem your Active Kids voucher for 2021.

Active Kids is a NSW government program that provides a $100 voucher to parents/guardians of school-enrolled children for registration and participation costs for sport and fitness activities.

You must be a member of ONSW to access the first three options here:

(1) Entry to 10 Saturday Orienteering Series events in 2021 (inc Sportident stick hire)

(2) Entry to 15 local orienteering events (not SOS or State League events) in 2021 (inc Sportident stick hire)

(3) Entry to NSW State League events up to the value of $100. For this option, please enter State League events as normal in Eventor. Once you have reached or exceeded the $100 value, apply to the ONSW office for the Active Kids reimbursement.

(4) Junior membership plus $60 value at SOS, Local or State League events by application to the ONSW office.

All the details are on our Active Kids web page.

Another SSS postponed

Apologies for the late notice but WHO have just decided to postpone tomorrow's SSS event at North Rocks (Wed Dec 30).

Orienteering events are permitted under the Public Health Order but the NSW Premier has at the same time asked people not to gather outdoors, and the organisers have sided with the latter recommendation.

We will look at rescheduling the Dec 23 and 30 events when we can.
