Welcome to Orienteering NSW

Orienteering is a sport that challenges both the body and the mind. It's also loads of fun!

The aim is to use a special orienteering map to navigate your way around a course and visit marked check points along the way. You choose a course that suits your age and experience and proceed at your own pace: walk, jog or run. It is a race but you decide if you want to just race yourself or be the next world champion! The course may take you through urban areas, parks, schools, farmland or forests.

Events are conducted weekly across NSW and beginners are welcome at all events.

New to orienteering? Click here for more information.

Want to enter an event? You can see what's on by looking at the Coming Events at left or by going to the Event Calendar. Some events are enter on the day - you just turn up and register at the start. Other events require pre-entry and for that you need to know about (and register with) Eventor - read the Eventor FAQ.

Long times at Eugowra

Tight contests in the men's elite classes and long winning times amid complex granite were the order of the day at the delayed NSW 2020 champs at Eugowra at the weekend.

Ewan Shingler (Big Foot), fresh from winning the M20E title at Easter, pipped Jensen Key (Vic) by one second over the 8.6km in M20A on Sunday. David Stocks (ACT) was only seven seconds away in third.

Ewan won by four seconds on Saturday - meaning his total victory margin over 13.2km (as the crow flies so probably about 16km) was five seconds. Wow.

In M21A, reigning junior world Sprint champion Aston Key edged out Alastair George (BF) by 27 seconds in the 10.7km race, with ACT's Matt Doyle less than two minutes further back in third.

In the Middle Champs on Saturday, Savanna Sweeney (WHO) had a breakthrough win in W14A as she stakes a claim for a spot in the NSW schools team. Likewise for Mel Joseph (Garingal) in W45A.

On both days the Dent boys (ACT) won the short courses each day, while the Woolford brothers (Bush n Beach) enjoyed a first and three second placings.

A big thank you to Garingal for a superb and thoroughly testing weekend.

All participants are asked to please complete the very brief course setter surveys for each day here.

Ewan Shingler wins Easter junior elite

Huge congratulations to Ewan Shingler (Big Foot, left) who has taken out the men's junior elite title at our big Easter carnival at Gumble Pinnacles near Molong.

Ewan was fourth in Monday's final race - featuring open farmland as a welcome relief in the first section - but had enough time up his sleeve to prevail in M20E overall by almost 13 minutes.

Clubmate and first year senior Alastair George was another bright spot on a tough day at the office with a third placing in M21E with a km rate of 6 minutes - a massive achievement against some way more credentialled interstate rivals. That lifted him to fourth in the overall standings.

Mikalya Enderby (Newcastle, W18E) was third on Monday to secure second overall - well done Mikayla!

Alas - three days of good work by Nea Shingler (W20E), Sam Woolford and Oskar Mella (M18E) was undone when they mispunched, thus forfeiting their overall chances.

Other outstanding NSW results from our juniors on the final day were:
* Cooper Horley (Garingal) winning M16A and running up an age class
* Aurelie Valais (WHO) winning W20A
* Rookie Kelvin Meng (Uringa, right) coming fourth in M18E

Across all classes, NSW orienteers on Monday recorded 15 wins, 20 seconds and 21 thirds.
In the final carnival standings, NSW orienteers achieved 14 first placings, 14 second placings and 19 third placings.

All participants are asked to complete the very brief course setter surveys for each day here.

A massive thank you to the organisers, setters, controllers and helpers as they had to prepare this carnival twice due to covid.
The end result was a huge success on very challenging courses.

Oh Lord, it's hard to beat Gumble!

There's a very good chance everyone will be talking for years about how hard today's courses were on Day 2 of the national Easter carnival on the legendary Gumble map.

Setter Eric Morris showed no mercy and there were only 4 age classes in which the winner managed less than 10 minutes per km. But this is a national carnival after all, and usually a JWOC/WOC selection trial, so expect difficulty.

And the cream has a habit of rising to the top - the Shingler kids (Big Foot) taking out 20E again, and Brodie Nankervis (VIC) and Grace Crane (ACT) the 21E classes.

In 18E Oskar Mella (Newcastle) and Mikayla Enderby (NC) were second, and Sam Woolford (Bush n Beach) third.

We suspected this could be a long day when the start triangle was in some dark green! The map looked like Pro Hart upended the salt and pepper shakers then squirted wasabi on top!

Some people were on course more than three hours; the AS winners came in just under the hour, and even the MiniKnat string course looked tough. This was a day when finding the control was exhilarating.

Across all classes, NSW orienteers recorded 17 wins, 22 seconds and 23 thirds.

Thanks Eric, thanks Nick Dent (controller) for a thorough test.

Results, Winsplits (by class and course) and cumulative times are on Eventor.

All participants are asked to fill in the very brief Course Setter of the Year survey. Your response provides valuable feedback to the setter and controller, while helping to decide who wins the prestigious Graeme Mitchell Trophy.

Mikayla, Sam win 18E on Day 1 of Easter

Mikayla Enderby (Newcastle) and Sam Woolford (Bush n Beach) won the 18E elite junior classes on Day 1 of the national Easter carnival on a tricky new granite map near Molong on Saturday.

Each won by 4-5 minutes on the Noah's Ark Ridge map making its debut in brilliant autumn sunshine.

Ewan Shingler (Big Foot) again won M20E, while sister Nea was third in W20E as was Oskar Mella (NC) in M18E.

The thin lode of granite running north-south on the map allowed setter Rod Parkin to include lots of criss-crossing legs, ensuring compass use was just as crucial as identifying which rock you were at.

The scale of 1:7500 also made for better legibility.

In M21E, Matt Doyle (ACT) dead-heated with junior world champion Aston Key (Victoria).

Olivia Sprod (SA) took out W21E while Queensland team-mates Krystal Neumann and Anna Sheldon tied for second.

The keenly awaited Sledge class had 34 runners in a mass start which ended with Ian Meyer (SHOO) triumphant and Steven Todkill (NC) third.

Across all classes, NSW orienteers recorded 23 wins, 15 seconds and 17 thirds.

A big thank you also to mappers Terry Bluett and Rob Vincent and controller Paul Prudhoe.

All participants are asked to fill in the very brief Course Setter of the Year survey. Your response provides valuable feedback to the setter and controller, while helping to decide who wins the prestigious Graeme Mitchell Trophy.
